Environments that Support Risk Taking – Part 3
Community of Learning modules in the series ‘Environments that Support Risk Taking’ are based on an Online Conversation held with Susan Stacey at Early Learning Café.
In Environments that Support Risk Taking – Part 3, Susan Stacey prompts educators to think more deeply about the names we give early learning spaces in programs and classrooms. Susan tells us, ‘Words are powerful.” To create thinking environments that support risk-taking we must consider how the words we use to describe spaces reflect and shape our practice.
Susan Stacey is an author of several professional books. She is an educator, college professor, presenter, and early childhood consultant. This Community of Learning module is based on chapter 3 of Susan Stacey book Inquiry-Based Early Learning Environments.

This module includes:
1. Video presentation
2. Pedagogical leader’s guide that offers:
a. Reflective questions
b. Professional learning activities
c. Additional resources
3. Continuous Professional Learning record
All components of this module are downloadable. The video can also be streamed, and the pedagogical leaders guide accessed live through Early Learning Café.
How much time does this module take?
This module offers 1 to 2 hours of professional learning. Communities of Learning modules are designed with flexibility in mind so that professional learning can take place when time is limited such as staff or team meetings, or when longer timeframes are available such as Communities of Practice gatherings. The amount of professional learning time will depend on variables set by the facilitator:
- Whether the optional icebreaker is used
- The amount of reflection time the facilitator allows in large and small group discussions
- Whether none, some, or all of the additional resources in the pedagogical leader’s guide are utilized
- The number of participants who engage in this professional learning at one time
